New post format: a weekly roll up of links, comments on news, activity updates and attempts at humor.  The intention is quicker hits in addition to the less frequent big posts, plus more timely nattering on about my favorite topics. Hopefully I can sustain it for more than a week. Let me know what you think.

The Krugman Files

Paul Krugman in 1998: “By 2005, it will become clear that the Internet’s impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine’s”

2013: “I don’t claim any special expertise in technology — I almost never make technological forecasts.”

Last week: “A.I. may change everything, but probably not too quickly”

Last week: “Predictions about the economic impact of technology are notoriously unreliable.”

This week: “Obviously I was wrong about the internet petering out.”

This week: “The Internet was an economic disappointment.”

LLMs are good substitutes for the predictable. That would seem to include Paul Krugman.

Since Elon continues to ruthlessly suppress the distribution of my jokes on Twitter, I’ll share them here. My current schtick is mostly Google/AI jokes:

Among other cost reductions, Google announced they are eliminating staplers. Does this mean they fear a stapler optimizer more than a paper clip optimizer?

Google declared “code red” for AI over three months ago. They followed it up with a half-assed press event intended to underscore just how serious they are about AI. In Paris. Without the CEO. More like “Code Rouge”.

Why not join us Twitter refugees on Mastodon? 🙂

  2. I had hoped Mastodon would be a near replacement for Twitter, but it isn’t and doesn’t seem to be on that trajectory.

  3. I appreciate there are different ways to use the same platform. For me personally it has been a pretty much 1:1 replacement. I follow folks, read what they post / boost and the replies; follow those whose replies I find interesting. Never used algorithmic timeline, and I’m not a prolific poster myself for a few reasons.

There are now also a few high quality clients for Mastodon (at least for iOS/Mac) that complete the former Twitter experience (I used Tweetbot).

What aspects of Twitter you found lacking on Mastodon for your own use patterns?

I’m wondering because this seems to be a theme of sorts – a bunch of folks have moved and never look back, but many others stay because of.. something?

  4. It isn’t about features, though Mastodon still very clunky. The issue is the network of people I’m interested in are still overwhelmingly on Twitter. Some left and have come back.

  5. Makes sense, I also have a few folks I follow who haven’t moved.

To see their tweets in my Mastodon timeline I’ve been using a gateway service “bird.makeup” which seems to work quite well – even shows on-Twitter replies.

The use is super-simple – just follow @@bird.makeup, e.g., @[email protected], no credentials needed or anything (which means it likely only works for public tweets, but still) 🙂

  6. I’d take Mastodon more seriously if the Mastodon people took it more seriously and were trying to build an actual Twitter replacement. They either aren’t interested in doing that or think they can achieve it via cottage industry.
