Platformonomics TGIF is a weekly roll-up of links, comments on those links, and perhaps a little too much tugging on my favorite threads.

And we’re back! A lot has happened in recent weeks while I was indisposed and/or distracted which I may or may not revisit. But most importantly, I’ve been threatening a year long celebration of this blog’s 20th anniversary, and I am afraid that anniversary is today. Fortunately there isn’t much going on in the world, so we can ignore most of the other news flow.

Telco Misadventures: Bell Canada and AI

Today we start what will no doubt be a recurring series chronicling telcos hopping on the latest trend, Because there is a network involved, the telcos are destined to win! (Telcos are basically the underpants gnomes in action). Somehow these telco forays beyond the dumb pipe don’t seem to end well, and their entry often signals a market top. It will be fun to track their AI initiatives.
I’m especially qualified to tell these stories, as I was recently selected to be one of “America’s 10 Most Trailblazing Telecom Leaders in 2025” (contingent entirely on my $1250 check clearing). I assume this august recognition stemmed from making fun of Verizon on the Telco20 podcast.
